Barney is a popular choice for events and has a wide experience in sport and previously when he worked full-time alongside his training. Not initially selected for the Great Britain National team until the age of 24, Barney worked as a Building Engineer, studying for his degree alongside both work and training. The benefit of this pre-sporting career life experience allows him to deliver in a different style to the majority of high achievers.
Barney started his international career as a solo track sprinter before having his attention grabbed by the tandem. The selfless role of a tandem pilot in working for and supporting the needs of a visually impaired or blind stoker, is a unique team environment. It is from this experience Barney can deliver on a range of subjects from the vital role team work plays in reaching goals, to the importance of open-mindedness towards change.
Barney remains the UK’s most successful sprint tandem pilot having worked in this role for 12 years until 2013 but his older entry in to the National team system gives him a different perspective and so he can use his own experience to motivate audiences and especially young people on the idea that it is “never too late”.
The intricacy of the tandem as both a machine and a team also gives Barney the ability to deliver messages of problem solving, resilience and overcoming adversity. Having suffered an horrendous front wheel explosion during a training session prior to Beijing in 2008, Barney and his stoker were lucky to walk away with minimal injury but the experience was intimidating. Speaking of overcoming the mental challenges that equipment failure can lead to is also another area of great interest to many of Barney’s audiences.
Barney tailors every speech or seminar to the needs to the client and the audience, subject matters can be as varied as required and repeat visits are also possible to cover a subject in more detail.
